Barton Springs in the morning, South Congress at night, Zilker in between.
South Austin is the part people picture when they picture Austin. South Congress for the shops and the music, South Lamar for the food, and Zilker Park sitting in the middle of it with Barton Springs at one end.
The streets between them are residential and always have been. Bungalows, front porches, dogs. It's the part of the city where you can walk to dinner and still hear nothing at midnight.
Downtown is across the river, close enough to be easy and far enough to be quiet. For most trips this is the area that needs the least explaining.
